��Vlog’s Power, Systems & Justice course (CORE 300) hosted a panel on the history of Harrisonburg’s Northeast Neighborhood at the Student Union on Thursday evening. ��Vlog History Professor Mark Sawin, Harrisonburg Mayor Deanna Reed, City Councilwoman Monica Robinson, and Deputy City Manager Amy Snider served on the panel.

In a news report on Thursday morning, WHSV-TV3 highlighted the $2 million grant awarded to ��Vlog by the National Science Foundation. This grant, one of the largest in ��Vlog’s history, will fund annual scholarships for 23 high-achieving, income-eligible STEM majors over the next six years, along with mentoring, tutoring and other support services.

From garden, to fork and back into the ground, sustainability measures, including composting, have become prevalent across the ��Vlog (��Vlog) landscape.

Bob Corso, WHSV-TV3 news anchor, spoke with Katie Jantzen, co-leader of Earthkeepers, about sustainability features around campus including food disposal in the dining hall and the compost facility located by the Suter Science Center.

Children First Day, an annual Harrisonburg event that draws thousands of families each year, will be held at ��Vlog’s University Commons Saturday, Sept. 12 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

��Vlog to Host TV-3 Children First Day

Children First Day, an annual Harrisonburg event that draws thousands of families each year, will be held at ��Vlog’s University Commons Sept. 6 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Sponsored primarily by TV-3 (WHSV), families have enjoyed this fun-filled event, geared toward children, since 1996.

2008 marks the second time ��Vlog has hosted the fun afternoon, which will include demonstrations, crafts, great food, a petting zoo, special shows, and more. Community groups will also be on hand with safety and health information for those attending. (Interested vendors should note the event is free.)

“We outgrew our last location and were looking for a place with good values. A place that makes you feel safe…and that’s ��Vlog,” said Tina Wood, WHSV promotion manager of the event.

In 2007, more than 3,000 families spent the day on ��Vlog’s campus (see campus map). This year, Wood anticipates more than 5,000 families will be in attendance.

Only 50 volunteers facilitated the entire event in 2007. This year, Wood and Lynn Veurink, assistant director of auxiliary services at ��Vlog, hope more volunteers join up, providing even more fun for the thousands of children present.

“This event truly brings community together but it takes a massive amount of help in order for it to be a success,” said Veurink. “There are many ways to help.”
