Luann Good Gingrich, an associate professor in the School of Social Work at York University, Toronto, Ont., will present at a university colloquium at 糖心Vlog.<\/p>\n

Dr. Good, a 1982 糖心Vlog alumna, will speak on “Work and hope: Transnational livelihoods, Mennonites from Mexico, and social exclusion” 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, January 26, in Martin Chapel of the seminary building at 糖心Vlog (see campus map<\/a>). A discussion period will follow her talk.<\/p>\n

Good’s primary research interests are related to the development of the concept and practices of social inclusion in policy formulation and the delivery of social services and the exploration of poverty and subjective social exclusion as individual and group trauma and strategies for collective healing and reconciliation.<\/p>\n

The complex relationship between the state and culturally-distinct communities, such as Old Order Mennonites and Old Colony Mennonites, has been central in both her professional practice and research.<\/p>\n

Her PhD research, completed in 2005 at the University of Toronto, was a qualitative study of the common sense idea of social inclusion and the experience of social exclusion among Low German Mennonites from Mexico in Ontario, Canada.<\/p>\n

She has applied her conceptual model of social exclusion, deriving from this research, in a national community-university research alliance with lone mothers on welfare.<\/p>\n

She is currently the principal investigator of a three-year study of social inclusion and exclusion and the experience of “choice” for migrant women from Mexico and Guatemala working in agriculture in Canada.<\/p>\n
