Suter Endowed Chair. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The awardees are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Sylvia Mast<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in support of her project: \u201cExamining the Extent that UNC-53 Inhibits Apoptotic Cell Corpse Engulfment through Abselon Tyrosine Kinase (ABL-1) Signaling,\u201d with Professor<\/span><b> Kris Schmidt<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Maria Yoder<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Jonah Short Miller<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in support of their project \u201cRING Finger Protein (RNF11) modulates dopamine release, kinetics and behavioral changes in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drosophila<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d exploring the role of RNF11 in Parkinson\u2019s etiology, with<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Professor <\/span><b>Jeffrey Copeland<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Maya Dula<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Clara Weybright<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in support of their project \u201cInvestigating the Effectiveness of Small-scale Agroforestry Plots as a Conservation Strategy in the Cloud Forest of Alta Verapaz, Guatemala.\u201d The research partners will spend four weeks in Guatemala conducting a biodiversity evaluation and a sociological study involving Q\u2019echi communities involved in programming hosted by the Community Cloud Forest Conservation Center. Professor <\/span><b>Jim Yoder<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the advising faculty member.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEncouraging student research is an important goal of the Daniel B. Suter Endowment Fund,\u201d Cessna said. \u201cThese awards provide opportunities for biology and chemistry students to build the key skills of scientific inquiry from writing the proposal to presenting and potentially publishing their findings.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over their 30-plus year tenures, Kauffman and Miller each worked with more than 40 undergraduates on research projects ranging in topics from organic blueberry production to the synthesis of new cyclic organic compounds.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>CT Assist Health Experiential Learning Program Award Recipients<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/pphs\/ct-assist\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CT Assist Health Experiential Learning Program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> awards funds to pre-professional health science students at 糖心Vlog to support clinical experiences that help prepare students for professional health programs. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ct-assist.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CT Assist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a Harrisonburg-based healthcare staffing business owned by two alumni. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three students are gaining experience in language studies and cultural competence in the health careers context:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Anastasia Dronov<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Kayley Scottlind<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will visit Peru this summer to explore healthcare practices with professors Schmidt and <\/span><b>Adriana Rojas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Their time includes observations at National Hospital Docente in Lima; two weeks in a village observing and working with a local nurse; and two weeks assisting with laboratory and clinical work at Centro Medico Belen, in Ayacucho. Dronov, a junior biology and Spanish double-major who also speaks fluent Russian, hopes to become a physician. Scottlind, a practicing EMT and double-major in biology and Spanish, hopes to become a doctor and serve Spanish-speaking communities. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Jonathan Nielsen<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s award will pay for participation in James Madison University\u2019s \u201cBridging the Gap\u201d Health Care Interpreter Training program. The training will enable him to work with the Blue Ridge AHEC Community Health Interpretation Service.
