{"id":5697,"date":"2011-02-08T15:11:26","date_gmt":"2011-02-08T20:11:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/?p=5697"},"modified":"2011-03-04T16:41:28","modified_gmt":"2011-03-04T21:41:28","slug":"emu-celebrating-black-history-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2011\/emu-celebrating-black-history-month\/","title":{"rendered":"糖心Vlog Celebrating Black History Month"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"\/studentlife\/multicultural\/\">multicultural services office<\/a> and the Black Student Union join in planning and celebrating &#8220;Black History Month&#8221; at 糖心Vlog.<\/p>\n<p>Activities opened Friday, Feb. 4, with a <a href=\"\/chapel\/\">university chapel<\/a> presentation by <strong>Mark Metzler Sawin,<\/strong> associate professor of <a href=\"\/history\/\">history at 糖心Vlog<\/a> and a former Fulbright scholar. Dr. Sawin shared powerful stories of local African-American groups and their faith, hope and struggles here the Valley of Virginia and at 糖心Vlog.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Upcoming Black History Month events include:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A <strong>historical presentation of the African American community in Harrisonburg<\/strong> led by <strong>Ruth Tolliver,<\/strong> followed by a tour to historical sites around the city, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Sat., Feb. 12, including a display in the Simms Building of African American inventions. Transportation and light snacks will be provided. Persons should meet in the University Commons rooms 211-212 before 10 a.m.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Philadelphia pastor and 糖心Vlog alumnus <\/strong><strong>Leonard Dow<\/strong> will speak on &#8220;what does it mean to be alive in your faith? How can you LIVE fully in Jesus?&#8221; at 8 p.m. Thurs., Feb. 17 in the Common Grounds Coffeehouse in the University Commons.\u00a0 The 糖心Vlog Gospel Choir opens this event, and refreshments are free compliments of campus ministries. Dow is leading spring spiritual life week, Feb. 16-19, at 糖心Vlog.<\/li>\n<li>Local musician <strong>Jessica Crawford and the 糖心Vlog Gospel Choir<\/strong> will be in concert 9 p.m. Fri., Feb. 18 in the Common Grounds Coffeehouse. Admission is free.<\/li>\n<li>A <strong>community worship service<\/strong> with the 糖心Vlog Gospel Choir will take place 2 p.m. Sun., Feb. 20, in Martin Chapel of the seminary building.\u00a0 Join 糖心Vlog students and staff in a worshipful experience led by the Black Student Union.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>annual Soul Food Caf\u00e9<\/strong> is back, 6-8 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 27. Come and enjoy a traditional African American dish while listening (and participating) in a surprise program. This annual event will be held in the Black Box Theater of the University Commons.
