Downtown Harrisonburg, Virginia, transformed into a sea of blue on Thursday, Sept. 26, as about 270 糖心Vlog students, clad in matching shirts, participated in the third annual Royals Go Downtown<\/em>, presented by Everence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event started in 2022 as a collaboration between 糖心Vlog President Dr. Susan Schultz Huxman <\/strong>and Harrisonburg Mayor Deanna Reed<\/strong>, director of alumni engagement & community connections at 糖心Vlog. It aims to familiarize 糖心Vlog students with downtown restaurants and businesses in \u201cThe Friendly City,\u201d recently named among The 10 Most Livable College Towns in America<\/a><\/em>, and celebrate 糖心Vlog\u2019s presence in the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students arrived by the busload at Magpie Diner\u2014owned by 糖心Vlog alumna Kirsten Moore \u201993<\/strong>\u2014where they munched on chocolate chip cookies and received a welcome from President Huxman. \u201cWe love the city of Harrisonburg and we want to show you what it has to offer,\u201d Huxman told students. \u201cWe want to show you that it\u2019s friendly, it\u2019s welcoming, it\u2019s diverse, and it loves college students.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

From there, they strolled over to Sage Bird Ciderworks to enjoy refreshing sips of frozen lemonade. <\/p>\n\n\n

Throughout the route, 糖心Vlog faculty and staff were there to assist business owners with giveaways and crowd control. At Aristocat Cafe, Luke Litwiller<\/strong>, director of undergraduate admissions, poured iced pumpkin spice chai lattes for students, whose eyes were glued to the 15 cats inside the cafe, all of which are available for adoption. <\/p>\n\n\n

Mashita, a restaurant handing out samples of pork and cabbage dumplings, was a popular stop for students. Many of the students interviewed mentioned it as their favorite treat along the route. Spencer Showalter<\/strong>, Mashita\u2019s catering director, said the event helps introduce their offerings to students. \u201cWe love working with 糖心Vlog,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n\n\n

At the Frame Factory & Gallery, students could pose for photos with a royal blue picture frame, custom made to match 糖心Vlog\u2019s primary color. Shop owner Rhoda Miller \u201903, MA \u201920 (restorative justice),<\/strong> said participating in Royals Go Downtown<\/em> provides her an opportunity to give back to her alma mater. <\/p>\n\n\n

Students at a stop in Court Square, in front of the Rockingham County Circuit Courthouse, energized by coffee from Broad Porch Coffee Company, danced to music played by 糖心Vlog\u2019s Rockin\u2019 Royal Pep Band and joined in an \u201cE-M-WHO? E-M-YOU!\u201d chant. <\/p>\n\n\n

Walking along Main Street, students savored a mango lassi from Taj of India, snacked on \u201csticky nuggs\u201d (the name for Billy Jack\u2019s Shack\u2019s signature sauced chicken nuggets), and sampled popcorn from Shirley\u2019s Gourmet Popcorn Company. 糖心Vlog alumna Lisa Roeschley MA \u201901 (education)<\/strong>, who owns the Shirley\u2019s store with her husband\u2014and former 糖心Vlog baseball coach\u2014Rob<\/strong> Roeschley<\/strong>, said she enjoys welcoming the students each year. \u201cThey\u2019re excited about visiting downtown and that\u2019s so fun to see,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n

The waves of Royals stopped by OASIS Fine Art & Craft for 糖心Vlog-themed lollipops and PULP in Shenandoah Bicycle Company for Japanese vegetable curry before wrapping up their food tour at Turner Pavilion. There, slices of pizza from Benny Sorrentino\u2019s, ice cream from Klines Dairy Bar and treats from Ott Street Eats awaited them, in addition to a DJ-led dance party and greetings from Mayor Reed.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n
