{"id":6136,"date":"2011-03-15T10:22:34","date_gmt":"2011-03-15T14:22:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/?p=6136"},"modified":"2011-04-11T11:03:14","modified_gmt":"2011-04-11T15:03:14","slug":"emu-theater-presenting-groundbreaking-absurdist-comedy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2011\/emu-theater-presenting-groundbreaking-absurdist-comedy\/","title":{"rendered":"糖心Vlog Theater Presenting Groundbreaking Absurdist Comedy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Theater at 糖心Vlog is presenting five performances of its spring mainstage production, &#8220;The Bus Stop,&#8221; by Nobel Prize winner Gao Xingjian [pronounced &#8220;kao hsing-chien&#8221;].<\/p>\n<p>The ground-breaking 1983 comedy will be presented 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Mar. 24, 25 and 26, at 8 p.m. Friday, Apr. 1 and at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Apr. 2 in the newly-renovated mainstage theater on ground floor of the University Commons. The play, directed by <a href=\"\/personnel\/people\/show\/hw456\">Heidi Winters Vogel<\/a>, associate professor of theater, runs approximately 90 minutes without an intermission.<\/p>\n<p>An absurdist play \u2014 it is frequently compared to \u201cWaiting for Godot\u201d \u2014 with touches of Brecht and even a hint of Chekhov (if only we could get to the city, the characters lament), &#8220;The Bus Stop&#8221; was attacked by Communist Party officials as \u201cspiritual pollution\u201d when it premiered in Beijing.\u00a0 Mr.\u00a0 Gao left China in 1987 \u2014 he now lives in Paris \u2014 and in 2000 won the Nobel Prize in literature.<\/p>\n<p>The student cast includes: Kindra Amott, Provo, Utah; Molly Boese, Freeman, S.D.; Shane Byler, Walnut Creek, Ohio; Travis Duerkson, Goessel, Kan.; Andrew Hostetter, Harrisonburg; Eric King, Harrisonburg; Morgan Porter, Richmond, Va.; and Erica Wagner, Wilmington, Del.<\/p>\n<p>Reserved tickets are $10 for adults ($12 at the door) and $8 for seniors and non-糖心Vlog students ($10 at the door) and are available through 糖心Vlog\u2019s <a title=\"Buy tickets online\" href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/boxoffice\">Box Office<\/a> at 540-432-4582.
